Ways to Reduce the Amount of Pain Medicine Used During Labor

If you don’t want to use a lot of pain medicine during labor, here are some things you can do:

  • Take childbirth classes and read this book to learn ways to reduce pain without taking medicines. Practice the labor-coping skills so you can use them easily. Also, learn about your medicine choices and how those drugs affect you and your baby.

  • Have a birth partner or doula (or both) to help you with labor-coping skills.

  • Before labor begins, choose the type of pain relief you’ll want, if needed. Talk to your caregiver about your plans. Write your wishes in your birth plan.

  • Make sure you and your partner know hot to tell if you’re coping well with labor. Can you keep a rhythm with your breathing or movement for a whole contraction? Can you relax between contractions? If so, you’re coping well.

  • If you feel like you’re not coping well, try another breathing pattern. Have your partner help you maintain your rhythm. Then see how you do during the next three contractions. If you’re still having difficulties, think about pain medicine.

  • When you start thinking about having pain medicine, ask these questions: How far dilated am I? Is labor likely to last much longer? The answers may help you with your decision.

  • If you decide to have medicine, ask for a low dose of the drug first. Use more only if needed.

  • Use the labor-coping skills for as long as possible.

  • When you go to the hospital, ask for a nurse who enjoys caring for women having natural childbirth.
